Walsh Whiskey, which is behind the Irishman and Writers' Tears brands, was founded in Co Carlow in 1999 by husband-and-wife team, Bernard and Rosemary Walsh. The company’s brands are sold in over 50 countries.
In 2019 the firm announced the end of its partnership with Illva Sarrono, the Italian drinks company, which had invested in Walsh Whiskey in 2013, with a new distillery opening in Carlow in 2016. In 2021 Amber Beverage Group acquired the firm, with Mr. Walsh remaining as managing director.
In 2021 Walsh Whiskey released its first single pot still expression in the Writers’ Tears range. Triple distilled, it is matured in bourbon casks and finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks from Spain and Florio marsala hogsheads from Sicily. It is bottled at 46% abv.
