Blackwater Distillery, situated in Ballyduff, Lismore, Co. Waterford is a micro-distillery that started production in November 2018, on the banks of the River Blackwater. The distillery building comprises a converted 1950’s hardware store and Blackwater were unique in Ireland in embracing blockchain technology where every bottle of whiskey produced featured a symbol that allowed customers to scan and access full information on the production journey.
Founded by author and TV producer Peter Mulryan, Blackwater’s three stills were made by Frills in Siena, Italy and produced poitín and gin prior to releasing its single malt whiskey.
Velvet Cap, a brand that was previously a local merchant brand bottled in Dungarvan until the 1960s, is a small batch blend of malt and grain whiskies sourced from un-named Irish distilleries and aged in bourbon, port and stouted rye casks.
This whiskey takes its name from the velvet caps traditionally worn in point-to-point horse racing. This particular sport dates from 1752 when riders raced between two points: St John’s Church Buttevant to St Mary’s Church, Doneraile in Co Cork–from one steeple to another, hence the term steeplechase.
Velvet Cap Triple Cask is blended and bottled at 40% ABV and is non-chill filtered.
